University: Assembly committee constituted to review Jharkhand’s universities, CM urges speaker

Jharkhand Chief Minister Hemant Soren on Thursday urged Vidhan Sabha Speaker Ravindra Nath Mahato to constitute a committee of the Vidhan Sabha to review the status of private universities in the state.
After the government withdrew the Jain University Bill 2022 citing inconsistencies in it, Soren urged the formation of the committee in the House.

Chief Minister Soren said that so far more than 20 university bills have been passed through the state assembly. He demanded the Speaker to constitute a committee of the Vidhan Sabha to study the condition of private universities. So that higher education can be made better.” Soren said, to be made better in the state.

Earlier, three MLAs from BJP, one from AJSU and one from CPI (ML) had requested the government to send the bill to a select committee for review. Bagodar MLA Vinod Kumar Singh alleged that the same society is opening universities with different names.

BJP MLAs Manish Jaiswal, Anant Ojha, Amit Mandal and AJSU MLA Lambodar Mahto also claimed that private universities lack proper infrastructure and are not following specific guidelines. Five bills, including two university bills, were passed in the assembly by vote. The Jharkhand Municipality Bill 2022 was one of the three amendment bills passed, which provides for reservation for the mayoral seat on the basis of population of a particular area.

Earlier, the post of Mayor and Zilla Parishad President used to have a tenure of five years on the basis of rotation. Due to this provision, the post of Ranchi Mayor has been reserved for a candidate belonging to Scheduled Caste category in the upcoming civic elections, which was earlier allotted to a candidate belonging to Scheduled Tribe category.
