In the year 2020, 796 cases have been registered under the Unlawful Activities (Prevention) Act (UAPA) across the country. A total of 6,482 people were prosecuted in these cases. Only 80 accused have been proved guilty during the trials. This is only 1% of the total cases. At the same time, 116 accused have been acquitted.

This information was given by Minister of State for Home Nityanand Rai in reply to a written question in Rajya Sabha on Wednesday. According to the information given by Rai, 5,027 cases were registered under UAPA in the last 5 years (2016 to 2020). In these cases, 24,134 people were tried, but only 212 were able to prove the charges. During this, different courts of the country acquitted 386 people.

Most cases registered in 2019
In the year 2016, 922 cases were registered. Under this, 3,047 people were tried and 24 accused were convicted and 19 were acquitted. At the same time, in the year 2017, 901 cases were registered under UAPA and 4098 people were prosecuted. In these cases, 39 were convicted and 42 were acquitted.

In the year 2018, 1182 cases were registered (4,862 people were tried, 35 were convicted and 117 were acquitted). The maximum number of 1227 cases were registered in the year 2019. In these cases, 5,645 people were tried, but only 34 were convicted and 116 were acquitted.

Information was also sought on the basis of caste and religion.
Rajya Sabha MP A.A. Rahim had sought information about the total number of cases registered under UAPA across the country during the last 5 years. The government gave this information in Parliament on the basis of data from NCRB (National Crime Records Bureau).

The MP had also sought the number of accused from different caste categories (SC/ST/OCB) and religion. However, due to non-maintenance of data on this basis in NCRB, this information could not be given.
