Two men carry corpse of 66-yr-old man into Irish post office to claim his pension

In what seemed to be scenes reminiscent of the 1989 film Weekend At Bernie’s, two men were seen dragging the dead body of a 66-year-old man into an Irish post office in an alleged bid to claim his pension.

In the dark comedy movie, two insurance salesmen lift the body of their murdered boss – pretending he’s still alive – and lose and recover his corpse, which is clothed and wearing tinted glasses, several times.

The deceased was identified as Peader Doyle and the Irish police are investigating if he may have died two days ago when Friday morning’s incident came into light, The Daily Mail reported.

The fraudsters, one of whom knew the elderly male well, had put a jumper over Doyle’s face, a hat on his head and carried the body down to the post office.

Both men, who were in their 30s, had initially visited the Carlow post office asking to collect the pension payment but were refused, with staff informing them that Doyle himself or his kin would have to be present in order for the money to be handed over.

It was alleged that afterwards they went to Doyle’s home and carried him along a public footpath before they again tried to claim his pension.

However, his appearance being “propped up” by the men led an employee at the Hosey’s shop in County Carlow to become concerned about his wellbeing, following which she asked if he was unwell.

According to the report, the duo is said to have told her that Doyle had a heart attack and placed his body on the ground.

As events unfolded on Friday, Gardaí– the Irish police, and an ambulance were called upon and the men stayed at the post office, making no attempt to escape.

A woman living beside the post office said her daughter saw the two men carrying the deceased man into the building.

“The man looked unwell and his feet were dragging the ground,” the woman was quoted as saying by the Irish Independent.

There was a queue outside of the post office at the time and people had initially thought the man was having a heart attack, the report said.

“I feel awful for the staff. I’ve a 12-year-old daughter and I’m trying to explain to her what happened and sure where do you start? It’s awful,” she added.

As per preliminary investigation, the accused told Gardaí that Doyle was alive when he was brought into the post office.

While no arrests have been made so far, both men have been interrogated by Gardai and have also recorded their statements.

The Gardaí are investigating if Doyle died at a nearby property of natural causes.

Residents and neighbours of the elderly man expressed shock and were sad after finding out about the incident.

While one described him as a ‘lovely man and neighbour’, another said it had been a ‘sad night’ and a ‘shock.’

The mayor of Carlow, Fianna Fáil councillor Ken Murnane, said he was “absolutely shocked” to hear the news.

‘I cannot believe anyone would do something like that. It beggars belief, I’m just shocked.’

A Garda spokesperson said Gardaí are investigating all the circumstances surrounding the unexplained death of an elderly male in the Carlow area on Friday morning.

“The services of the Garda Technical Bureau and the Office of the State Pathologist have been requested. A post-mortem will be conducted by the Office of the State Pathologist, the results of which will determine the course of the investigation. No further information is available at this time,” the spokesperson was quoted as saying by The Daily Mail.
