Scientists considered the kidney the most suitable for transplant because there are 2 kidneys in the human body. Even if one kidney is removed, a person can still live. Kidney transplants were tried several times only after 1900, but each time the patient died due to one reason or the other. Because of this, the hopes of scientists about the transplant began to break.

On 23 December 1954, scientists got a major breakthrough in the field of transplant. Richard Harrick, 23, had kidney disease. Richard Harrick contacted doctors at a hospital in Boston. One good thing about Richard’s case was that he also had a twin brother, Ronald.

Because of this it was decided that Richard would be given kidney transplant of his twin brother. The team of Dr. Joseph Murray did a kidney transplant in an operation that lasted about 5 hours. This transplant was successful and Richard lived for 8 more years. The doctor who performed the surgery, Joseph Murray, was later awarded the Nobel Prize.
