145 years ago today, that is, on 15 March 1877, the first cricket test match started in Melbourne, Australia. This Test was played against All England vs A Combined New South Wales and Victoria XI.

It was later considered to be played between Australia and England. Many of its records are still held today.

In the first test match, England was captained by James Lillewhite and Australia was captained by Dave Gregory. Australia won the toss and scored 245 runs thanks to Charles Bannerman’s 165-run knock. Bannerman became the first batsman in the world to score a century in Test cricket. None of the other batsmen could score more than 20 runs. In reply, England’s team got out for only 196 runs. For England, opener Harry Jupp scored 63 runs, Harry Charlwood scored 36 runs, Alan Hill scored 35 runs.

Australia’s second innings was poor and the team was reduced to 104 runs. Tom Harron could only score 20 runs. England got a target of 154 runs to win, but England’s team could not achieve this target and got out for 108 runs. Australia won this historic test match by 45 runs. The result of this match came on the fourth day. At that time there was one day of rest in the five-day Test. In this way, after three more days of rest day i.e. 18 March, the result of the match came in Australia’s favor on 19 March.

James Southerton of England was the oldest player to play Test cricket. He played the first Test match at the age of 49 years and 119 days. This record has not been broken till date. At the same time, Bannerman was the player to play the first ball of the Test match and also the first Test century.

Ganga and Yamuna also legal persons
