On this day in 1931, Sardar Udham Singh avenged the Jallianwala Bagh massacre by shooting British officer Michael O’Dwyer, who was the Governor General of Punjab, in London. The Jallianwala Bagh massacre took place on 13 April 1919 in Amritsar, Punjab.

On the day of Baisakhi, a detachment of the British army, on the orders of Brigadier General REH Dyer, fired indiscriminately at the protesters who were peacefully opposing the Rowlatt Act. More than 1,000 unarmed women, men and children were killed in this massacre. More than 1,200 people were injured. Hundreds of women, elderly and children jumped into a well built there to save their lives, due to which they died.

General Dyer carried out this barbaric shooting at the behest of the then Governor General of Punjab, Michael O Dyer. On 13 March 1940, 21 years after this massacre, Sardar Udham Singh went to Caxton Hall in London and shot Michael O’Dwyer. At that time he was going to sit on his seat by giving a speech at a meeting of the East India Association and the Royal Central Asian Society. Dyer had died within minutes.

To shoot Dyer, Udham Singh took the revolver hidden in the book. After the incident, Udham Singh was arrested and prosecuted. Udham Singh was hanged on 31 July 1940.

General Dyer died of a brain hemorrhage in July 1927. Now Udham Singh’s target was Michael O’Dwyer. Udham Singh stayed in London for 6 years to kill Dyer. Finally, on 13 March 1940, he got that opportunity.
