Jallikattu (a traditional bull-taming event) was inaugurated by ​​​​electricity minister V Senthil Balaji at Chettipalayam in Coimbatore on Friday amid Covid-19 restrictions.

COIMBATORE: Jallikattu (a traditional bull-taming event) was inaugurated by electricity minister V Senthil Balaji at Chettipalayam in Coimbatore on Friday amid Covid-19 restrictions.
Around 700 bulls and 300 tamers participated in the event. The bulls were brought from Madurai, Pudukottai, Tiruchy, Salem, Thanjavur, Dindigul, Theni and Ramanathapuram.
Bull tamers were allowed to take part in batches. For each round which lasted for an hour, 50 tamers were allowed. Those who were successful in taming the bulls, were qualified to take part in the final round which is scheduled to take place at 3pm.
With Covid-19 restrictions in place, spectators were restricted to a few hundreds. The spectators were instructed to follow Covid appropriate behavior at all times.
Bull tamers and bull owners were given many prizes including gold and silver coins, bicycle, steel bed and bureau, wrist watches and utensils.
The best bull tamer would win a car and two-wheelers to be given away as second and third prizes at the end of the event.
