Foldables are getting a new avatar with the tri-fold form factor

Tecno has shown innovative products over the years and the new tri-fold device is also one of the first in the foldable space.

Tecno has unveiled its tri-fold concept smartphone called Phantom Ultimate 2. The device was showcased at the Internationale FunkAusstellung (IFA) in Berlin this week. As the name suggests, the handset sports a triple foldable screen based on a dual-hinge mechanism. Tecno Phantom Ultimate 2 is the successor to the Tecno Phantom Ultimate, a rollable smartphone prototype that the company debuted at the Mobile World Congress (MWC) 2024 in Barcelona earlier this year.

Although its new concept device folds up into the size of a little candy bar, Phantom Ultimate 2 opens up to reveal a large 10-inch interior display that can easily rival a full-sized tablet.

Ultra-Thin Tecno Phantom Ultimate 2 Tri-Fold Concept: More About It

Tecno says the Phantom Ultimate 2 has a 6.48-inch cover display and a large 10-inch LTPO OLED inner screen with a resolution of 1,620 x 2,880 pixels. This display’s aspect ratio is 4:3. The company claims it is the first foldable device in the market to combine touch and display driver integration (TDDI) technology. The phone features an advanced 3K LTPO screen with 392 PPI.

The Ultimate 2 is 11 mm thin, maintaining a thickness comparable to other book-style folding smartphones in the market including the Google Pixel 9 Pro Fold (10.5 mm), despite having an additional foldable screen. When folded, the Tecno smartphone is thinner than the Samsung Galaxy Z Fold 6, which measures 12.1 mm.

The concept features a dual-hinge mechanism has reportedly undergone 300,000 folds and unfolds of testing. While the design for the tri-fold handset has been shown, the Chinese smartphone manufacturer has not confirmed whether or not it will go into production.

Concept smartphones are typically offered to highlight the company’s manufacturing capabilities as well as any technology in development. Tecno is unlikely to be the lone Chinese entrant in this space. Huawei is apparently preparing its own version of a tri-fold device with an event set for October this year.
