The Zojila Pass, connecting Ladakh with Kashmir, was opened for the first time in January, breaking the BRO record of keeping it closed for 58 days last season.

The Union Territory of Jammu and Kashmir administration has approved the handing over of 173 acres of land in Gulmarg and Sonmarg to the Army for High Altitude Warfare. Both these places are among the highest and inaccessible places in Kashmir, where soldiers will be trained for high-altitude warfare. Under the order, 129 acres in Gulmarg, 44 acres in Sonmarg have been declared as ‘Strategic Areas for Armed Forces’.

Here, former CM Mehbooba Mufti alleged, the government wants to convert tourist places into army forts by giving land to the army. Kashmir’s Divisional Commissioner Pandurang Kondbarao Pol told that the army will use this land for training. It was under the army for 40 years. Now the army will be able to build a new structure here according to the need.

According to military experts, the government is giving high priority in training the army for any situation in future. The training provided to the army by getting this land will help them to effectively counter Pakistani and Chinese forces. In Sonmarg, it is already preparing the soldiers for deployment in Siachen Glacier and other such places. The famous High Altitude Warfare School is located in Gulmarg itself, which trains jawans in Snow-craft and Winter Warfare.
