Surat: Baby survives nanny-horror, returns home | Surat News – Times of India

Video grab of the caretaker hitting baby Nirvan

SURAT: Ever since his birth during the second wave of Covid-19, baby Nirvan has been battling for life.
A premature baby, he was first hospitalized for one and half months. In December last year, he was admitted again with severe viral infection and breathing problems.
On February 4, he was rushed to hospital for admission for the third time after his nanny took out her frustration on the helpless child and slammed him on the mattress resulting in brain haemorrhage.
But the resilient little boy took all the challenges head-on and returned home triumphantly for the third time on Wednesday, after nearly a month’s hospitalization. While the journey has been rough for Nirvan, his twin Nirman will have to wait to hear the heroic deeds of his brother till they both grow up.
Baby Nirvan had suffered two brain haemorrhages of five and three millimetres each, two fractures in his skull along with swelling in the front side of the brain. The baby suffered recurrent seizures multiple times a day. He was unconscious and unable to breathe at that time, but after being put on the ventilator for a few days, Nirvan regained consciousness and started breathing on his own.
“The baby had multiple neurological problems and was critical when admitted,” said Dr Chetan Shah, a paediatrician. From two fractures in the skull to two haemorrhages, multiple seizures, and being unconscious, the baby boy recovered well and has been discharged after his condition turned stable, he added.
The parents’ joy knew no bounds when their baby started moving his hands and legs after almost 20 days of hospitalization. While he is yet to move his head, Nirvan is responding to noise but his vision is nearly 10 percent due to a blood clot in the back of an eye, which docs claim will improve with time. Meanwhile, he is taking liquid food through a pipe and is kept on medication for the seizures.
Parents spent 4 lakh on the baby’s treatment
We are relieved now as Nirvan’s health is stable. We hope that his health improves completely like in the past,” said Mitesh Patel, sports coach in a local school. The couple spent more than Rs 4 lakh for Nirvan’s treatment.
“Due to premature delivery both children were in the hospital for over one and half months and I had to spend Rs 11 lakh then. He was again admitted in December due to cough accumulation in the chest but recovered and discharged,” said Patel.
Patel borrowed money to pay the bill last year and to repay the debt he and his wife Shivani, instructor in ITI, started working in November and kept his friend’s wife Komal Tandlekar as a caretaker for their twins. Suspicious of Tandlekar thrashing his children, Patel installed a hidden CCTV camera in the home and the brutality was caught on camera. Tandelkar is seen twisting the boy’s ears, slapping and shaking him in the air before slamming him on the mattress. She was arrested on charges of attempt to murder on February 5.
