There will be a hearing in the Supreme Court today on the issue of Delhi Mayor election. AAP’s mayoral candidate Shelly Oberoi has filed a petition challenging the decision to give voting rights to nominated councilors in the mayoral elections. Shelly has demanded from the court that the election of mayor should be done under the supervision of the Supreme Court.
Earlier on Monday, the matter was heard, where a bench headed by CJI DY Chandrachud said that the law is very clear that the nominated members do not have the right to vote. After this, it was told from the LG’s office that the election of February 16 has been postponed.
AAP-BJP uproar in three meetings
AAP strongly opposes LG VK Saxena’s decision to allow 10 nominated MCD members to vote. Because of this, BJP and AAP created a lot of ruckus in the meeting of councilors on 6th January, 24th January and 6th February. Because of this the election of the mayor could not be held. The Municipal Corporation of Delhi Act also states that the nominated members or aldermen cannot vote in the meetings of the House.
On February 6, AAP and BJP members created a ruckus at the MCD headquarters. Due to this the elections could not be held.
AAP opposes voting for nominated members
Chief Minister Arvind Kejriwal-led AAP has strongly opposed the right of the Lieutenant Governor to give voting rights to nominated members, who were appointed by the Centre. The AAP has accused him of pushing the BJP’s agenda by trying to obstruct the work of the Delhi government. The party alleges that these nominated members are inclined towards the BJP.
Broom in MCD elections
The AAP won 134 wards in the MCD elections held in December, ending the BJP’s 15-year rule. The BJP secured the second position by winning 104 wards, while the Congress came third. The party won only on nine wards.
Delhi will get a woman mayor
The office of the Mayor of Delhi sees 5 single-year terms on a rotating basis, with the first year reserved for women, the second for the open category, the third for the reserved category, and the remaining two again for the open category. . In this way Delhi will get a woman mayor this year.
