Southern Railway invites bids to construct track underpasses near Coimbatore to provide safe corridors for elephants | Coimbatore News – Times of India

COIMBATORE: The Palakkad division of Southern Railway has invited e-tender bids for construction of two underpasses between Ettimadai and Walayar stations to provide safe corridors for wild elephants to cross tracks. The tender has been invited three months after three elephants were knocked down by a Chennai-bound train at Mavuthampathi near Walayar on November 26 last.
According to railway sources, the tender bid invited the contractor to construct the proposed two underpasses between Ettimadai and Walayar stations (B line) (twin single line) and related work.
Sources said the total project cost is Rs 7.49 crore that including the construction of two underpasses (in two different places in the stretch) and electrical work. Of the total cost, Rs 5.68 crore is the work amount.
The closing date of the tender is March 28. The contractor selected through the bid must complete the works within 24 months.
