The word Harijan will no longer be used to name any colony or locality in Delhi. Rather, Dr. Ambedkar’s name will now be named in its place. Delhi’s Social Welfare Minister Rajendra Pal Gautam issued its notification during a meeting on Thursday. Along with this, instructions were also given to pass it soon.

Gautam said that the word Harijan would soon be removed from the streets, colonies, localities, clinics and Dr. Ambedkar.

Gautam said that Delhi is the first state in the country to ban this word. Many people are also claiming that this word is offensive and derogatory.

Parliamentary committee recommended change of name
He said a parliamentary committee had made the recommendation in April 2018. Referring to people belonging to SC communities, the Union Ministry of Social Justice and Empowerment had asked all departments, state governments and union territories to stop using the words ‘Dalit’ and ‘Harijan’.

Aam Aadmi Party is working in this direction since 2019. The Delhi SC/ST/OBC Welfare Department has written to the Urban Development Department, emphasizing that it is a derogatory term and people belonging to the Scheduled Castes do not like it.

Although this process would have been completed earlier, it was delayed due to Kovid. It also directed the law department officials to complete the process within 10 days, after which a notification would be issued.
