Snapchat wants to put AR and GenAI into its platform for the users

Snapchat is also tapping into the GenAI fever and it claims to help users create new AR images for a different experience.

Snapchat is advancing its augmented reality (AR) capabilities by integrating Generative AI (GenAI) powered features. This innovative technology allows users and creators to unleash their creativity on the platform like never before. Imagine describing a scene and watching it materialise in your surroundings instantly.

With this new feature, “vision becomes a reality.” Reports indicate that users will be able to type a description and generate a 3D image in real time. Unlike earlier versions of AR technology, which had limitations, developers can now create more realistic and sophisticated lenses.

The company’s tech chief Bobby Murphy said, “What’s fun for us is that these tools both stretch the creative space in which people can work, but they’re also easy to use, so newcomers can build something unique very quickly. This and future real time on device generative ML models speak to an exciting new direction for augmented reality, and is giving us space to reconsider how we imagine rendering and creating AR experiences altogether.”

The company made this major announcement at the Augmented World Expo, which was held in California, USA. According to TechCrunch, users can expect to start using lenses very soon, while creators will be able to begin making lenses by the end of this year.

Bobby Murphy further claimed that the model will be compact which will help it run on a smartphone and will have enough speed to re-render frames in real time.

Along with Generative AI, Snapchat is also rolling out a variety of new AI tools to simplify the creation of unique AR effects for creators. The latest Lens Studio update introduces new face effects, allowing creators to command or upload images to generate custom lenses that can dramatically modify a user’s facial appearance.

While the exact release date for the new feature, GenAI, has not been announced yet, users can expect the launch in the coming months.
