Shradh Paksha has started. But why did it start? How and when did it happen? By the way, Shradh has been going on since Vedic times. The praise of the ancestors along with the gods is mentioned here. In Treta Yuga, there is a mention of Shradh of father Dasharatha by Rama. The story of Gaya is related to that. It is mentioned more in the Mahabharata period.
There is a belief related to Pitru Paksha that on the date on which the person died, he should do Shradh, Dhoop-meditation and Pind Daan on the same date.
According to Mahabharata, the first sermon of Shradh was given by Maharishi Nimi to Atri Muni. After this other sages also started performing Shradh. On the whole, the Pitra Yagya of the Vedas was later expanded in the Puranas. There has not been much change in the traditions till date.
In the scriptures, three birds and three trees are considered equivalent to ancestors. There are three birds – crow, swan and eagle. There are three trees – Peepal, Banyan and Bel tree. It is said that the deities reside in Peepal. People remember this poem written by considering Gulzar and Shradh as an instrument-
“How much garbage does Peepal do in the courtyard. Mother has to do Bohari twice a day. How do friends and friends come about this? It gives peepalis to eat. Parrots sitting on branches all day long. Half eat, half go. All the gitak-vitaks are thrown in the courtyard itself. Birds have also built houses on a branch. The straws keep flying in the courtyard all day long. A squirrel from dawn to dusk, knows what remains bright. After running and running, all the branches come around tens of times. The eagle sometimes sat on the top branch, like a dwarf, keeps talking to itself. Bones, plucked from the neighbourhood, even the botis of mass, fucking these crows, sit on the branch of peepal and eat them. It is said from above that Peepal is a solid Brahmin. If the mother does hush-hush, then all these rascals fly away by throwing them at her. Still, why does the mother say – Come Kaga… Ayyo, you on my Shradh! Sure ayo…!”
Apart from Pitru Paksha, on Amavasya of every month, Shradh, tarpan, incense-meditation and charity should be done for the ancestors.
This is the reason why Peepal and Cork have great importance in Shradh Paksha. It is said that if you sit under these trees, Pitras are satisfied. And even if you feed these birds, the pitras are satisfied. These sixteen days of ancestors are very important. Know why, people these days avoid auspicious work time! Whereas these days of ancestors, ancestors can be the most auspicious for us. Whatever happens to us with the blessings of our ancestors these days.
