In a statement, police said they were monitoring a “concerning trend of violent extremism and terrorist use of the Internet”

Canadian federal police said Saturday that a youth was arrested and charged with terrorism-related offenses that allegedly targeted Jewish people. The young person arrested Friday was charged with facilitating terrorist activity by communicating instructional material related to an explosive substance.

The youth is further charged with knowingly instructing a person to carry out terrorist activity against “Jewish persons.” Canada’s Global News reported that an explosives team was sent to the site of Friday’s arrest. “I was shocked to learn the details of a planned attack against Ottawa’s Jewish community,” Ottawa Mayor Mark Sutcliffe said on X.

“There has been a rise in antisemitism in Ottawa in recent weeks.” He added he was grateful that strong investigative work by the RCMP and Ottawa police was able to avert an attack. He said police would continue to patrol synagogues and other Jewish institutions.

Police did not release further details about the alleged offenses. Officials also said no further information about the youth could be released due to the suspect’s age. In a news release, The Royal Canadian Mounted Police (RCMP) said it is seeing a concerning trend of violent extremism and terrorist use of the internet, including among young people.

The RCMP urged adults in authority positions to watch for early warning signs of radicalization. Those include dehumanization of others, extreme anti-government attitudes and clear statements of intention to carry out violent acts.

Terror Threat Foiled

Canada’s Opposition leader Pierre Poilievre said the alleged terror plot targeting Jews in Ottawa should awaken Canada to the horrifying rise of anti-semitism since Hamas’ genocidal Oct. 7 attack on Israel. “We must redouble our efforts to protect our people and defeat anti-Jewish hatred. Thanks to the RCMP for their work to protect our people,” he wrote on X.

Tensions have spiked in Canada over the Israel-Hamas war — with gunshots fired at Jewish schools, and other institutions firebombed in recent weeks. Several countries around the world have seen attacks on Jewish targets increase amid the intense Israeli strikes on Gaza in response to the October 7 attack by Hamas. The arrest of a teenager accused of plotting a terrorist attack against the Ottawa Jewish community is the latest sign that Canada is struggling with the radicalization of youths, Global News reported.

The report said the minor, taken into custody on Friday night, was the second youth apprehended for terrorism in two days. On Saturday, the RCMP said it had arrested five youths for terrorism just in the past six months, and that it had seen a “concerning trend” of terrorists using the internet to recruit youths.
