Shatrughan Sinha in Asansol, to hit campaign trail today | Kolkata News – Times of India

ASANSOL: The Bihari Babu missed the first Sunday campaign, yet he remained the talk of the town. His iconic dialogue “Khamosh” continued to ring among his fans and supporters of the Trinamool Congress as they campaigned for Shatrughan Sinha – the TMC candidate from Asansol constituency bypoll.
Sinha, who reached the Andal Airport at around 7.15 pm on Sunday, is likely to file his nomination on Monday at the DM office in West Burdwan. The enthusiasm around the former Union minister was palpable as large numbers of TMC supporters gathered at the airport. He was greeted by state minister Moloy Ghatak and Asansol Municipal Corporation mayor Bidhan Upadhay. “Mamata Banerjee is a tigress in Indian politics and I am happy to contest from Asansol,” he said. Sinha left for the Asansol’s Grand hotel soon after. Meanwhile, TMC workers were asked to gather at Rabindra Bhavan on Monday morning for Sinha’s nomination.
Commenting on the outsider issue, Sinha said, “The Prime Minister is going to Kashi-Beneras to get elected. The logic should apply to him as well.”
The party’s rank and file have, however, started preparations already as the party leaders conducted consecutive meetings since morning. All TMC MLAs, block presidents, and councillors were present at the meeting. In the 2019 Lok Sabha polls, Babul Supriyo, contesting for the BJP, had bagged more than 51% votes from Asansol as a BJP candidate, defeating the TMC’s Munmun Sen by nearly 2 lakh votes. In 2021 assembly polls, the TMC gained significantly in the area and won five out of seven assembly segments of Asansol Lok Sabha constituency.
BJP candidate and Asansol South MLA Agnimitra Paul started campaigning along with ex-mayor Jitendra Tewari and other leaders at Ghagar Buri temple where she offered prayers. “If Bengal wants its daughter (CM Mamata Banerjee’s campaign slogan in 2021 assembly polls), then Asansol will want its own daughter, too,” she said. She may file her nomination on March 23.
Left candidate Partha Mukherjee started his campaign from Mohishila. Congress is yet to declare its candidate.
