This submarine can work in both anti-surface warfare and anti-submarine warfare.

The Indian Navy’s Vagir submarine started sea trials on 18 May. It is equipped with submarine anti-ship missiles and torpedoes. Its specialty is that it does not get caught in the enemy’s radar. After several rounds of testing at sea, it will join the Indian Navy’s fighter fleet next year.

The first submarine was found in 1974

Vagir Submarine was launched on 20 April 2022 from Kanhoji Angre Wet Basin of Mazagon Dock Shipbuilders Limited. This is the sixth submarine to be built under Project 75. The first submarine was commissioned into the Indian Navy in December 1974 and was retired in April 1997.

After this, the second submarine INS Kalvari was inducted into the Indian Navy in December 2017. The third submarine INS Khanderi was commissioned in September 2019, the fourth submarine INS Karanj in March 2021 and the fifth INS Vela in November 2021.

Vaagir is named after a species of sand fish, a deadly marine predator of the Indian Ocean. It is also called silent killer. It completed major trials of weapons and sensors in the shortest possible time as compared to other submarines.

The submarine has a speed capability of 20 kmph above water and 40 kmph underwater.

The Ind Kumar Gujral government had decided to give 25 submarines to the Navy. Project 75 was created for this. Under this project, a 30-year plan was made to build submarines. In 2005, India and France signed a $3.75 billion contract to build six Scorpene-design submarines. The first submarine of the Kalvari class was received by the Navy in 2017.

40 crew members in submarine
About 40 crew can work simultaneously in Vagir Submarine. There are about 9-10 officers in it. There is less free space in a submarine. Because of this extra care has to be taken. After three hours of duty, the jawans take a break of six hours.
