The Supreme Court has granted bail to 8 accused in the 2002 Godhra burning of the bogie of the Sabarmati Express. These convicts were serving life sentence, the Court granted bail taking into account the time spent in jail for 17-18 years and their role in the crime. At the same time, the other 4 convicts were denied bail. In the same case, on Monday, the Supreme Court had rejected the bail applications of 11 convicts, who were sentenced to death by the trial court.

The trial court had sentenced 31
The trial court had convicted 31 people in the case. Of these, 11 people were given death sentence, while 20 people were sentenced to life imprisonment. After this, the convicts appealed in the Gujarat High Court. The High Court had also held all the 31 people guilty. However, the sentence of 11 people who were sentenced to death was commuted to life imprisonment.

Bail plea of ​​15 convicts rejected
A bench of Supreme Court Chief Justice DY Chandrachud, Justice PS Narasimha and JB Padriwala heard these bail petitions. There were a total of 31 convicts in the case, out of which the bail applications of 15 have been rejected. 8 convicts have got bail today. The bail plea of ​​7 people is pending in the Supreme Court. And one convict got bail only in December last year.

The Gujarat government had demanded death sentence for the 11 convicts.
Solicitor General Tushar Mehta, appearing on behalf of the Gujarat government, had demanded that the convicts, whose death sentence was commuted to life imprisonment, should be sentenced to death again. This is not a simple matter like throwing stones at a train. This is the rarest of rare case. In this, 59 people were burnt alive, including women and children.
