Saree Walkathon: More than 15,000 women from 15 states took to the streets of Surat, took a pledge to stay healthy

A ‘Saree Walkathon’ was organized on Sunday under G-20 in Gujarat’s Diamond and Textile City Surat. Over 15,000 women clad in sarees participated in the ‘Saree Walkathon’ to stay fit and raise awareness about women empowerment.

The program started from Vijay Chowk and ended at Nirman Bhawan.

The ‘Saree Walkathon’ was jointly organized by Surat Municipal Corporation and Surat Smart City Development Limited under the theme of ‘Health for All’. Women from states across the country participated in it. Foreign girls who came to study in Gujarat also took part in the event.

More than 15,000 women had registered
Union Minister of State for Textiles and Railways Darshana Zardosh, home state of Gujarat Harsh Sanghvi, State BJP President CR Patil and many other dignitaries flagged off the walkathon. Surat Municipal Commissioner Shalini Agarwal said that more than 15,000 women had registered for the event.

The program started from Vijay Chowk on the duty path and reached Nirman Bhawan via India Gate. The women on foot took a pledge to lead a healthy and orderly life to prevent and control lifestyle related health problems/diseases like hypertension, diabetes, mental illness and cancer.
