Sandeep Lamichhane, Ex-Nepal Captain And IPL Star, Sentenced To 8-Year Jail Term In Rape Case

Sandeep Lamichhane, the former Nepal cricket team captain who was covicted in a rape case, has been sentenced to a jail term for eight years on Wednesday (January 10), confirmed news agency ANI. Earlier, Lamichhane was found guilty of rape by the Kathmandu District Court on December 29 last year. Judge Shishir Raj Dhakal examined the facts and evidences related to the case before deeming the former Delhi Capitals star guilty. However, the court noted that the victim was not a minor at the time of the crime even though the initial allegation was that he had raped a minor.

While the charges were brought against the Nepal cricketer in Septembe 2022, the cricketer got a bail pending on trial which was the reason he could continue to ply his trade in international cricketing assignments. A lower court order which had mandated his detention was initially overturned by the country’s Supereme Court in January 2023.

Sandeep Lamichhane’s Cricket Career

The news means Lamichhane’s career might be paused for good, if not end with him having to serve a prison sentence. The 23-year-old has represented Nepal in 51 ODIs and 52 T20Is.
