Surrounded by allegations of ‘#Me Too’, Sajid Khan is appearing in Bigg Boss Season-16 these days, which is being heavily criticized. Many women including singer Sona Mohapatra, TV actress Devoleena Bhattacharya and Kamya Punjabi have openly expressed their displeasure over this.

In 2018, Sajid Khan was accused of sexual harassment by several women. Due to these allegations, Sajid Khan was also fired from the film ‘Housefull-4’. He was the director of this film.

From this one story you can understand how big and powerful the ‘Me too’ movement has become. Me Too’s social media has been flooded with the hashtag since 2017. Under this, lakhs of women from all over the world narrated their ordeal.

We will tell you in detail about what is the MeToo movement and how it shadowed social media, but first it is important for you to know that the #MeToo movement was started on 15 October 2017. So today this movement has completed 5 years.

#MeToo used for the first time on Myspace

Me Too means me too, with me too. In its place, words like Same here, Ditto, Likewise are also used in English but there is hardly any word as effective as ‘MeToo’. Due to this, this word became the voice of all those women who had been victims of sexual abuse at some point in life and were choking inside because of that pain.

In 2006, Tarana Burke, who lived in America, started the #Metoo movement for women who were victims of sexual harassment so that they would have the courage to fight against the crime committed against them and she could tell her ordeal without any shame and hesitation.

He first used the word #Metoo on a social media platform named Myspace. But then it did not become so popular or perhaps it did not go unnoticed.

Before moving on, let us tell you who is Tarana Burke?

American actress’s tweet opened the eyes of the world

America’s famous newspaper New York Times published a news about Hollywood producer Harvey Weinstein, which caused a sensation. Harvey Weinstein was accused of sexual abuse by more than 80 women. It was only after this that on 15 October 2017, the #Metoo movement suddenly started trending on Twitter.

The credit for this goes to American actress Alisa Milano. It was Alisa who tweeted using this hashtag. He tweeted- ‘Women who have been victims of sexual abuse, tweet their ordeal using the #Metoo hashtag’. After this there was a flood of tweets. Many celebrities from all over the world broke their silence.

85 countries and 2 lakh tweets in 1 day

#Metoo has been used 2 lakh times till the night of 15 October 2017. By October 16, this hashtag had been used 5 lakh times.

At the same time, this hashtag also created panic on Facebook. According to Facebook, 4.7 million people used #Metoo in 12 million posts in 24 hours.

Of these, 45% of the users were from the US. At the same time, #MeToo started trending in different names in the world.

In France where it was called #BalanceTonPorc. At the same time, in the Gulf countries, it started trending with the hashtag #Ana_kaman.

According to Twitter, as of October 24, 2017, people in 85 countries used #Metoo in tweets.

Tanushree Dutta was the first to tell her ordeal in India

Even though the #Metoo movement started in the world in 2017, the bomb of this movement in India exploded in 2018, when Bollywood actress Tanushree Dutta unabashedly accused a well-known artist like Nana Patekar of sexual abuse.

On 26 September 2018, Tanushree said in a TV interview how she was subjected to sexual harassment by Nana Patekar on the sets of the movie ‘Horn Ok Please’ in 2009.

After him, many famous women came forward and broke their silence.

People supported me after joining #MeToo campaign: Tanushree Dutta

Tanushree Dutta told Woman Bhaskar that I am constantly associated with the #MeToo campaign. I believe that service does not take place only in a temple, gurudwara or mosque. Service to humanity is the greatest service. One should always raise voice against wrong behaviour.

#MeToo was a good initiative. In our country, if a boy or girl raises voice against sexual harassment, then why does society’s attitude towards them become so negative? Why do we hesitate to support a girl who has been abused? Our silence gives the wrongdoer the courage to do the same wrong thing again.

I am glad that I am associated with the #MeToo campaign. Although when I narrated my ordeal, I got mixed reactions from people, but 99% of the people supported me. People knew that I had suffered a lot. I am saying what I have suffered and am doing right. Another result of this was also people were afraid to talk to me. But today their fear has turned into love and support for me. Even after joining the #MeToo campaign, I have been getting offers from films continuously. I want to be associated with good projects which can touch people’s heart.

Name earned by work, character soot on granddaughter’s mouth

In #Metoo, journalist Karishma Upadhyay, model Simran Suri, Jiah Khan, Sherlyn Chopra, Dimple Paul, actresses Saloni Chopra, Rachel White, Aahana Kumar and Mandana Karimi accused Sajid Khan of sexual abuse.

Writer-director Vinta Nanda and actress Sandhya Mridul exposed Alok Nath’s misbehavior.

Singer Sona Mohapatra accused Anu Malik and Kailash Kher of sexual harassment.

Writer Ira Trivedi named Chetan Bhagat in MeToo campaign.

At the same time, many celebs openly supported #Metoo. Lady Gaga, Gabrielle Union, Barry Crimins, Anna Paquin, Patricia Arquette, Debra Messing, Rosario Dawson, Katie Stevens from Hollywood tweeted #Metoo on Twitter.

At the same time, many actresses in India including Bipasha Basu, Aditi Rao Hydari, Rakulpreet, Taapsee Pannu, Twinkle Khanna, Richa Chadha, Huma Qureshi, Dia Mirza praised women who raised their voice against sexual exploitation.

Before proceeding, know from the graphics, who were accused of sexual abuse:

did not reach common women #MeTooconfined to social media

According to Sambhavi Mahadik, a counselor associated with Coro India NGO working for women, the #Metoo campaign did not reach the common women.

If such campaigns go on continuously, then the confidence increases among women to raise their voices, but MeToo has become a trend in social media which remained limited among celebs.

She says that even today women in the society do not tell anyone about their sexual abuse. Her NGO does workshops with women at the community level in the basti. Most of these women are factory workers or household workers.

If something goes wrong with the house worker, she leaves the job but doesn’t complain. She thinks that if she tells the family members, she will not allow them to work.

People will think that he did something wrong that is why he is scared. For this reason only 3-4 cases of sexual abuse come to us in a year.

How can there be sexual harassment, understand from the graphics:

Iran girl’s death linked to #MeToo

Iran has been in the headlines for many days. There 22-year-old Mehsa Amini was murdered in police custody. But the police said that he had a sudden heart attack. This angered the women there. There are continuous demonstrations. There many people are also linking it to #Metoo.

Referring to #MeToo in one of her tweets, Iranian actress Golsfiteh Farahan asked people that how can you call yourself a feminist? How can you demand equality of men and women by disappearing from the #MahsaAmini movement and supporting #MeToo? It is not a matter of religion, it is a matter of woman’s freedom and body.

Let us tell you that there is a dress code for women in Iran. Mahsa Amini was against this dress code. She was taking the metro to Tehran when the police took her into custody. She was walking around without a hijab.

Sexual abuse is done with the most obscene gestures in India:

After MeToo, #ChurchToo also caught on in 2017

In November 2017, American author Emily Joy and social media influencer Hana Pash started #ChurchToo on the lines of #MeToo against sexual abuse of women in churches.

The movement gained momentum in January 2018 when Andy Sauvage, pastor of the Highpoint Church of America, was accused of sexually abusing a 17-year-old girl. After this Andy had to resign. Meanwhile, #SilenceIsNotSpiritual started trending on social media.

Hash tags dominate social media against sexual abuse

It’s 2015. Liana Di Faria, the founder of the organization ‘Think Olga’ in Brazil, started the #MyFirstHarrassment movement on social media. She works on women’s rights.

At the same time, in 2019, #MenAreTrash started trending against the violence of men in South Africa. In fact, after raping a 19-year-old girl at the Cape Town Post Office, she was murdered. This angered the women.

Many women all over the world become victims of this. See graphics:

When all the actors reached the event in black color dress

The Golden Globe Awards were held in the US in January 2018. In this, more than 300 actors and actresses were seen in black clothes on the red carpet. The motive was to give a message to the world against sexual exploitation.

It included big stars like Angelina Jolie, Jessica Chastain. During this time the Time’s Up movement also started.

In this event, famous American host Oprah Winfrey praised the women who came forward and told their tragedy to the world.

If there is sexual abuse then under which section is the case registered? Learn:

Men feel power by teasing women

International research group Promundo conducted a survey in Egypt and Lebanon on why men sexually abuse women. Of this, 31% of Lebanese and 61% of Egyptian men admitted that they sexually abused girls and women in public places. This included many actions including staring, chasing, touching.

The surprising thing that came out in this survey was that the men who did this had passed high school or college. That is, most of the men were educated. The men also believed that they were suffering from stress or depression.

His family does not respect him. To show his power, he used to harass the women on the way. They would have felt better by doing so. A research team named GfK found that 65% of women in the US were victims of sexual harassment.

If there is wrongdoing in the workplace, then complain like this:

3,71,503 cases of crime against women were registered

Neighborhood boys whistle, forcibly sticking stranger on the bus, chasing a stray boy while going to college, touching a relative inappropriately in the house… and every time you avoid them or become a victim of their dirty antics… While asking the question – what do I do? Whom should I tell, whom should I help? How long will this last?

So the simple answer is to break the silence and open your mouth. As long as you do not speak, you will remain the ‘thing’, yes ‘thing’ to entertain that person’s heart.

According to the National Crime Records Bureau, about 4 lakh cases were registered in 2020. Of these, 3.71 lakh cases were of crimes against women.

According to the National Commission for Women, 30,865 complaints were registered in 2021. In this, 4613 complaints were filed by married women. All of them became victims of sexual abuse due to dowry and other reasons. 624 cases were registered by women employees.

With these statistics, you can think to yourself, what are you in the eyes of men?

These matters may subside rapidly but for this you have to teach your sons to respect the girl.

Women have been exploited every century

History is witness to the fact that women have been exploited for centuries. The Greek poet and writer Aristophanes considered women to be objects of consumption. In ancient Rome, women were controlled by men. The rape of women from Italy’s Sabine is considered a dark chapter in the history of Rome, but this incident has always been a topic of discussion among poets, artists and historians. The Roman historian Livy called the rape of Sabine women a necessity instead of violence.

This is from the 8th century. King Romulus of Rome wanted to increase his empire. He asked the women of the tribe of his neighboring country to live with the men of Rome. All the tribes refused to do so.

After this the king made another policy. He celebrated the festival in the name of the Roman god Neptun and sent invitations to all the tribes. It also included the Sabine tribe. Sabine women were so beautiful that the men of Rome attacked them. But, Livy called it the love of men. Not only this, in the book ‘The Art of Love’, the poet of Rome told how to flirt with women in public places.

90% of women are victims of sexual harassment at home, on the road, in buses, in the market or in the office. There will be many such girls, sisters and women among all of us, but all consider it prudent to take their face instead of getting the guilty punished. But know this, it is neither wisdom nor bravery. If you become coward, then the person in front becomes domineering.

It is better to hurt the honor for which you are silent every day than to hurt the person who is hurting your body and mind. Then let’s take a decision to break our silence, today and now.

Because your silence today will force future generations to remain silent. The #MeToo movement talks about breaking that silence. And this is right too.
