On Tuesday, Russian troops stepped up their assault on Mariupol, a port city in eastern Ukraine, as part of a huge attack that the US has warned could include the use of chemical weapons. Moscow is thought to be attempting to link seized Crimea with the Russian-backed rebel areas of Donetsk and Lugansk in Donbas, and has encircled the strategically positioned city, which formerly housed over 400,000 people.
