Qualities of dowry in the book of Nursing: Written – Dowry helps in the marriage of ugly girls, after protests the publisher removed the book from the market

The virtues of dowry have been described in a sociology book from a Delhi college. It is written that because of dowry, even ugly girls get married. The protest started after this page of the book went viral on social media. On this the publisher has hurriedly recalled the book from the market.

Publisher JP Brothers Medical Publishers Pvt Ltd’s book Sociology for Nurses on page number 122 of the book mentions the virtues of dowry. On the cover page of the book, it has been told to be written according to the syllabus of the Indian Nursing Council (INC), but INC has distanced itself from it.

INC said in an official statement, “It has come to notice that some authors of Sociology for Nursing are publishing their books using the name of INC. INC condemns any content that violates the law. It is also clarified that INC offers only those syllabus for various Nursing programs which are on its website.

Shiv Sena MP raised objection
Shiv Sena’s Rajya Sabha member Priyanka Chaturvedi has also written a letter to Union Education Minister Dharmendra Pradhan, demanding action against its author TK Indrani for terming the content of the book as derogatory against women.

It is written in the book
The book reads- ‘Due to the burden of dowry, many parents have started educating their girls. When girls are educated or have a job, the demand for dowry will be less. This is an indirect benefit. Ugly girls can be married with good or ugly looking boys with a reasonable dowry.

Publisher clarified
JP Brothers, the publisher of the book, said – We have withdrawn the book from the market. Serving the medical community for more than 5 decades. We will work seriously to avoid such incidents in future.
