The current working DGP of Punjab, Siddharth Chattopadhyay.

A decision can be taken today on the appointment of a new permanent DGP in Punjab. In this regard, UPSC has sent a panel to the Punjab Government. According to sources, a panel of officers has been formed since the removal of Dinkar Gupta from the UPSC. In which the current working DGP Siddharth Chattopadhyay is not named.

If Chattopadhyay is removed, VK Bhavra can become the new DGP of Punjab. He has also conducted elections in Punjab as ADGP in 2019. This time, in the context of Punjab elections, the officers of Punjab Police are in discussion about their closeness to political parties and especially to the current government.

The screw was stuck on the date

Actually, Charanjit Channi became the new Chief Minister after the removal of Captain Amarinder Singh from the chair of CM. However, he did not immediately remove DGP Dinkar Gupta. Without this, on 30 September, the Channi government of Punjab sent a list of 10 officers to the UPSC. Although Dinkar Gupta was on leave then. He was removed by the government on 5 October. This is where the screw was stuck because UPSC says that since Dinkar Gupta was removed, the post of DGP will be considered vacant. The panel will be sent accordingly. At the same time, the government was asking to assess it from 30 September. However, UPSC did not accept it. Chattopadhyay is unable to fulfill the condition due to sending the names from October 5 onwards for 6 months. He is retiring on 31 March 2022.

Bhavra will be the only contender

If UPSC prepares the panel from October 5, then the names of three senior officers are VK Bhavra, Dinkar Gupta and Prabodh Kumar. However, Dinkar and Prabodh are going on deputation to the centre. In such a situation, Bhavra will be the only contender and it is possible that under his leadership, Punjab Police will take care of the security arrangements in the next assembly elections.
