Probe starts into sawfish catch | Mangaluru News – Times of India

Udupi: Fishermen in Malpe had reportedly caught a rare sawfishalso known as carpenter shark, on Thursday. It is a critically endangered species, protected under Schedule 1 of the Wildlife (Protection) Act 1972.
Sources said that the 10ft-long fish was brought to the Malpe harbour by fishermen who had returned after deep-sea fishing. A crane was then pressed into service, to bring the sawfish to the auction area. The fish reportedly weighed about 250 kg.
Ganesh K, joint director fisheries department, said it was probably an accidental catch, and the wildlife division of the forest department officials have initiated an inquiry.
