President Draupadi Murmu has appointed Justice Dhananjay Yashwant Chandrachud as the next Chief Justice of the country. Justice Chandrachud will take oath on November 9. He will be the 50th Chief Justice of the country. His term will be till 10 November 2024. He will succeed Justice UU Lalit, who is retiring on November 8. His father YV Chandrachud has also been the Chief Justice of the country. YV Chandrachud also holds the record of being CJI for the longest time (1978 to 1985).

Attended Homosexuality-Ayodhya Cases Hearing
In May 2016, Justice DY Chandrachud was appointed a judge in the Supreme Court. Justice Dhananjay Yashwant Chandrachud, born on November 11, 1959, is the current sitting judge of the Supreme Court. He has done LLB from Delhi University. In 1998 he was nominated as Senior Advocate in Bombay High Court. He has also been the Chief Justice of Allahabad High Court. Justice DY Chandrachud has been involved in hearing cases related to Sabarimala, homosexuality, Aadhaar and Ayodhya.

Justice Chandrachud’s father was the 16th CJI
Justice Chandrachud’s father Yashwant Vishnu Chandrachud was the 16th CJI of the country. His tenure lasted from February 22, 1978 to July 11, 1985 i.e. for about 7 years. He will sit in the same post 37 years after his father’s retirement. Justice Chandrachud has also overturned two major decisions of his father in the SC. He is known for his impeccable decisions. Justice DY Chandrachud will have a tenure of 2 years from November 9, 2022 to November 10, 2024.

Law Minister Kiren Rijiju wrote a letter to CJI Lalit on 7 October urging him to name his successor. It is a convention that the incumbent CJI recommends the name of his successor only when he is requested to do so by the Law Ministry.

Decision to demolish Noida Twin Towers
Both the towers of Supertech in Noida were demolished on August 28. On August 31, the Supreme Court had ordered the demolition of the towers. The construction of the twin towers violated the rules of the National Building Code.

In Kerala, Akhila Ashokan alias Hadiya (25) married a Muslim boy named Shafeen in 2016. The girl’s father had alleged that it was a case of love jihad. His daughter was forcibly converted and married. The High Court then annulled the marriage and ordered Hadiya to be kept with her parents. After this the matter reached the Supreme Court and the court set aside the order of the Kerala High Court regarding the annulment of Hadiya’s marriage.

privacy as a fundamental right
In 2017, the Supreme Court recognized privacy as a fundamental right. Chandrachud was also included in this bench. The court wrote in its decision – There were serious flaws in the majority decision in the ADM Jabalpur case. By accepting the Constitution, the people of India have not surrendered their life and personal liberty to the government.

Right of abortion to unmarried
The Supreme Court gave the right to abortion to all women, whether married or unmarried. The court said that under the Medical Termination of Pregnancy Act, everyone has the right to abortion from 22 to 24 weeks. The bench was headed by Justice DY Chandrachud.

Chief Justice of Jammu and Kashmir and Ladakh High Court appointed as Chief Justice of Rajasthan High Court
The Center has transferred Chief Justice of Jammu and Kashmir and Ladakh High Court Pankaj Mithal as Chief Justice of Rajasthan High Court. Justice Ali Mohammad Magrey has been appointed as the new Chief Justice of the Jammu and Kashmir and Ladakh High Court. The Supreme Court Collegium had made recommendations on September 28 regarding these appointments.
