Prime Minister Narendra Modi on Monday joined the Indian Navy’s NIIO (Naval Innovation and Indigenization Organization) program ‘Swavalamban’. On this occasion, he said that the goal of self-reliance in the Indian armies is very important for the India of the 21st century. Organizing the first self-reliance seminar for a self-reliant Navy is an important step in this direction.

PM Modi said that India’s defense sector was also very strong before independence. At the time of independence, there were 18 ordnance factories in the country. Many types of goods were made here for the army. We were an important supplier of defense equipment in World War II, but now we have become the largest importer.

Important points of PM Modi’s address…

  • The creation of 75 indigenous technologies for the army is a first step in a way. We have to work to increase their number continuously. Your goal should be that our Navy is at an unprecedented height when India celebrates 100 years of its independence.
  • Learning from the approach of the past decades, we are today developing a new defense ecology system. Today the Defense Research and Development Organization has been opened to the private sector, academia, MSMEs and start-ups.
  • We have given new strength to the public sector defense companies by organizing them in different sectors. Today we are making sure that how we connect our premier institute like IIT also with defense research and innovation.
  • In the last 8 years, we have not only increased the budget of the defense sector, we have also ensured that this budget is useful in the development of defense manufacturing and ecology systems in the country itself. Today, a large part of the budget earmarked for the purchase of defense equipment is being spent in procurement from Indian companies.
