On Friday, the Supreme Court made a strong comment on the Bengal government for showing haste in the investigation of Pegasus spy case. The Supreme Court has stayed the investigation of the Madan B Lokur Commission of Bengal. It was created by the Bengal government to investigate the Pegasus case. When the matter reached the court, the government had given an affidavit that it was going to close the investigation.

Chief Justice of India (CJI) NV Ramana, Justices Surya Kant and Hima Kohli raised strong objections to the investigation not being closed even after giving affidavits on August 25. On behalf of the Bengal government, the court said to senior advocate AM Singhvi, who was present in the court that you had given an affidavit that the Bengal government will not investigate if there is a case in the court, but the government’s investigation is going on.

Singhvi told the court that the state government has not interfered in the functioning of the commission. However, he had conveyed the will of the Supreme Court to the Commission of Inquiry. The commission started its work after the Supreme Court’s order was issued on 27 October.

Senior advocates Harish Salve, Mahesh Jethmalani and Ravi Sharma appeared in the court on behalf of Global Village Foundation Charitable Trust NGO. He also demanded from the court to make the secretary of the commission a party. He said that the court should ask the secretary why the commission decided to go ahead with the investigation when the court was awaiting the report of the expert panel.

How Pegasus Spyware Works
Pegasus targets iPhone and Android devices. With Pegasus installed, its operator can take chats, photos, emails and location data from the phone. The user does not even know and Pegasus activates the phone’s microphone and camera.

Pegasus can be installed remotely on any phone or any other device. Pegasus can also be installed on your phone with just a missed call. Not only this, it can also be installed on your phone through WhatsApp message, text message, SMS and social media.

When was Pegasus in the headlines before?

  • Pegasus first came into the limelight in 2016. UAE human rights activist Ahmed Mansoor had received several SMS from unknown numbers, in which several links were sent. When Ahmed got suspicious about these messages, he got these messages checked by cyber experts. Investigation revealed that if Ahmed had clicked on the link sent in the message, Pegasus would have been downloaded in his phone.
  • Saudi Arabian journalist Jamal Khashoggi was assassinated on 2 October 2018. Pegasus’s name also came up in the investigation of this massacre. Investigative agencies had raised suspicions that Jamal Khashoggi was spied before his murder.
  • Pegasus was in the limelight in 2019 as well. Then WhatsApp said that the WhatsApp information of about 1400 journalists and human rights activists was hacked from their phones through Pegasus. Congress leader Digvijay Singh raised this matter loudly in the Rajya Sabha and also made many allegations against the government.
  • Apart from this, the Mexican government has also been accused of using this spyware illegally.
