The Center and the Assam government on Thursday signed a tripartite peace agreement with eight insurgent tribal organizations of Assam. Union Home Minister Amit Shah and Assam Chief Minister Himanta Biswa Sarma were also present during the accord in Delhi. During this, Amit Shah said that today about 1,100 members of tribal groups have returned to the mainstream by putting up arms.

The eight insurgent tribal groups that entered into a pact with the government include Birsa Commando Force (BCF), Adivasi People’s Army (APA), All Adivasi National Liberation Army (ANAL), Adivasi Cobra Military (ACMA) and Santhali Tiger Force (STF). Huh. These tribal groups are in a ceasefire with the government since 2012 i.e. 10 years back. After the ceasefire, they are living in government camps.

After the agreement, Union Home Minister Amit Shah said that today is a very important day for Assam and the entire North East. Various programs have been taken up to make the North East peaceful and developed. Today we are moving ahead by crossing a big milestone.

At the same time, CM Sarma said – With this agreement, the people of our tribal tribe will get social justice, will get a huge opportunity for economic development as well as get political rights. Under the agreement, they will get a tribal welfare council, which will also be given a budget. On January 27 this year, 246 insurgents belonging to two militant groups in Assam laid down their arms.

169 rebels of United Gorkha People’s Organization (UGPO) and 77 rebels of Tiwa Liberation Army (TLA) laid arms in front of Assam Chief Minister Himanta Biswa Sarma and DGP Bhaskar Jyoti at a function held at Srimanta Sankardev Kalakshetra in Guwahati.

The Karbi Anglong Agreement was signed in 2021
The Government of Assam signed the Karbi Anglong Agreement on 4 September 2021 with 6 insurgent organizations. These armed groups were involved in violent incidents for over 30 years. Union Home Minister Amit Shah, Assam Chief Minister Himanta Biswa Sarma and Union Minister Sarbananda Sonowal were present during this agreement.

Armed groups that have signed the Karbi Agreement include Karbi Longri North Cachar Hills Liberation Front (KLNLF), People’s Democratic Council of Karbi Longri (PDCK), United People’s Liberation Army (UPLA), Karbi People’s Liberation Tigers (KPLT), Karbi People’s Liberation Tigers (R) and Karbi People’s Liberation Tigers (M).

Assam government to spend 1000 crores on development of Karbi region
Amit Shah had called this agreement historic. He had said that the Assam government would spend about Rs 1000 crore for the development of the Karbi region in the next five years. It is the policy of the Narendra Modi government that we fulfill all the promises made in the agreement during our tenure itself.
