patna: Bihar logs 132 fresh cases of Covid; Omicron enters state | Patna News – Times of India

PATNA: Showing a clear trend of third wave of Covid-19 pandemic emerging in Bihar, the daily caseload of infected persons was recorded in three digits for the first time after more than five months as the state recorded 132 cases on Thursday. Also, the state reported the first case of Omicron variant of the coronavirus on Thursday.
A 25 year old Kidwaipuri resident has tested positive for Omicron variant. This is the first official confirmed Omicron case in Bihar. His sample was sent on December 25 to Delhi and the report came on Thursday evening.
State health society executive director Sanjay Kumar Singh said, “He had gone to Delhi the previous week to receive his brother who was returning from a foreign country. His brother was however stopped at Delhi itself after his report showed the Omicron variant. This boy also after returning to Patna got himself tested as he had interacted with his brother and even got isolated.”
Singh said the department will be tracing all his contacts now, including as to which mode he had used to travel back to Patna.
Meanwhile, Patna continues to be the epicentre of fresh surge in the Covid curve as a whopping 60 cases were reported in the last 24 hours. Style also remains the Covid hotbed as 46 cases were reported on Thursday.
Patna civil surgeon Dr Vibha Kumari told TOI that eight persons infected with the virus in the last 24 hours are aged 18 years or less and almost. She added most of the newly infected persons have taken both doses of Covid vaccines.
“Though the virus is not fatal this time but it is highly transmissible. The highest number of cases in the city is from Boring Road so far, followed by Patna City. Contact tracing is being done continuously and we have found people coming from places such as Dubai, Bangalore, Kolkata and Ranchi among other places. In fact, large number of people from other places coming to Patna on regular basis is one of the reasons for higher number of cases being reported in the capital city,” Dr Vibha said, adding that Covid testing has been expedited.
Patna and Gaya apart, five cases were reported from Munger on Thursday, followed by three each in Jamui, Jehanabad and Buxar, two each Rohtas and Madhepura, and one each Saran, Saharasa, Lakhisarai, Katihar and East Champaran.
With the rapid spike in Covid cases, the state now has 333 active cases of persons infected with the virus. The overall Covid tally in the state so far has now surged to 7,26,737, out of which 7,14,308 persons have recovered from the infection, including 14 persons in the last 24 hours. However, no fresh casualty was reported in the last 24 hours, as a result the Covid death toll remained at 12,096.
Meanwhile, the recovery rate among coronavirus patients in the state has dropped slightly and stands at 98.29%, whereas the corresponding national rate stands at 98.38%. Altogether, 6.07crores samples have been tested for Covid-19 in the state, including 1,62,039 in a period of 24-hours.
Also, 8,05,904 doses of Covid vaccines were administered in the last 24 hours, taking the overall vaccination dosages to 9,94,25,351.
