The Parliamentary Committee on Law and Order Affairs will hold a meeting today regarding the Uniform Civil Code (UCC). The Law Commission, which is preparing the draft on UCC, has also been called in this meeting.

BJP’s Rajya Sabha MP Sushil Modi will preside over the meeting. In which 31 MPs and all the members of the committee will be included. Opinions on UCC will be sought from all and considered.

Sibal said – debate on UCC thoughtless exercise
Two days before this meeting, Rajya Sabha MP Kapil Sibal termed the debate on UCC as a thoughtless exercise. He asked- Is there an attempt to ‘unify’ under UCC? Traditions are the law under Article 23. Government should tell whether HUF applicable only to Hindus will be removed? The government should clarify what exactly the government is trying to do.

Union Minister Piyush Goyal targeted Kapil Sibal and Congress for questioning the execution of UCC. Talking to the news agency ANI, he said – it is the need of the hour that the assembly parties should unite and give it legal garb.

The Supreme Court has also talked about bringing different decisions to the UCC five times. Sibal has forgotten the development work done for the minorities. No one has done as much work as the Modi government. I think leaders of all parties will support for UCC.

Amid the raging debate on UCC, the central government has announced the convening of the monsoon session from July 20, which will continue till August 11.

Prime Minister Narendra Modi was addressing the Mera Booth, Sabse Strong campaign at Motilal Nehru Stadium in Bhopal on 27 June. Here he raised the issue of UCC.

Why the debate on UCC started
On June 27, Prime Minister Modi, while addressing 10 lakh booth workers of BJP in Bhopal, advocated the early implementation of Uniform Civil Code across the country. PM said- People are being instigated on Uniform Civil Code. A house cannot run by two laws. BJP will clear this confusion.

Opponent the parties has What Said

The Aam Aadmi Party (AAP) and the Shiv Sena of the Uddhav Thackeray faction have supported the PM’s statement of implementing the Uniform Civil Code across the country. However, Uddhav has placed a condition of clarification from the government.

National Congress Party (NCP) led by Sharad Pawar has neither supported nor supported UCC i.e. it is neutral. At the same time, National Conference leader Farooq Abdullah has said that the government should repeatedly consider the consequences of implementing the UCC.

Shiv Sena (Uddhav faction) and AAP in support of UCC

  • Shiv Sena (Uddhav faction): Chairman Uddhav told the MPLB members on Wednesday that we support the UCC, but we also want an explanation from the government. We want the government to tell what impact it can have on different communities. Also, the motive behind starting the discussion on UCC now is not clear-cut by the Modi government.
  • AAP: AAP’s Rajya Sabha MP Sandeep Pathak said- We support UCC because Article 44 also says that there should be UCC in the country. However, for this, a consensus should be formed after consulting people of all religions, political parties and organizations.
  • BSP: BSP supremo Mayawati has also supported the UCC. He said- his party is not against the Uniform Civil Code. But the constitution does not support its imposition. We have disagreements on the BJP model of implementing UCC. BJP is trying to do narrow minded politics through UCC.

Statements of parties opposing UCC

  • NCP: The party discussed the issue of UCC in the working committee meeting. After this National Secretary Naseem Siddiqui said – We neither support UCC nor oppose it. There is a need for discussion on this among the public and the sections associated with it.
  • National Conference: Farooq Abdullah said that the government should not put too much emphasis on UCC. Think again and again about the consequences of implementing it. The country is full of diversities and people of different religions and castes live here. Muslims have their own separate Sharia law. The government should think, there may be a storm.
  • AIMIM: Chief Asaduddin Owaisi had called the debate on UCC a conspiracy. It was said that the BJP is trying to divert the attention of the public from the main issues.
  • Congress: MP Shashi Tharoor said, ‘As far as the Uniform Civil Code is concerned. Prime Minister Nehru had said that there should be UCC, but we have to take everyone along. You cannot forget any one section in any country.
  • SP: MP ST Hasan said – We cannot leave the instructions of Hadith. The constitution gives every person the right to propagate his religion.
  • DMK : CM MK Stalin said- Modi is thinking of winning the 2024 Lok Sabha elections by inciting communal feelings and creating confusion in the country.
  • Shiromani Akali Dal : Daljit Cheema said that the implementation of UCC will affect the rights of minorities and unrest and tension will increase in the country.
