The names of the Padma awardees have been announced on the eve of Republic Day. Dr. Dilip Mahalanabis of West Bengal has been awarded Padma Vibhushan posthumously. He was given this honor for the discovery of ORS. Apart from them, SP leader late Mulayam Singh Yadav, tabla player Zakir Hussain, Balakrishna Doshi and Srinivas Vardhan have been honored with Padma Vibhushan.

9 celebrities including Kumar Mangalam Birla and Sudha Murthy have been awarded the Padma Bhushan. Apart from these, 91 have been awarded the Padma Shri.

Ratan Chandrakar has been awarded the Padma Shri for his work on Measles in the Jarawa Tribes of Andaman. Hira Bai Lobi has been awarded the Padma Shri for her work on children’s education among the Siddhi Tribes in Gujarat and Dr. Munishwar Chander Davar of Jabalpur. Dr. Munishwar has been treating the underprivileged for 50 years very cheaply.
