Odisha’s Kendrapada district will get a mega steel plant, for which public hearings to acquire land will begin from December. The state government has applied for environmental clearance, which the industries department is hopeful of getting by December or January.

ArcelorMittal Nippon Steel is to set up an industry with a capacity of 24 million tonnes per annum. It will be investing more than Rs 1 lakh crore to set up the plant. This will create at least 16,000 jobs in Kendrapada, Jajpur, Jagatsinghpur and Bhadrak districts of the state.

Industry minister Pratap Dev said: “The state government has taken all the steps to speed up the mega steel plant in Kendrapada. We have applied for environmental clearance. As it takes six to eight months, public hearings will be in December. Land acquisition process will be expedited accordingly.”

In 2021, the state government’s high-level empowered committee approved the establishment of the plant. A decision has been taken to increase the capacity later.

During his visit to Japan in April, chief minister Naveen Patnaik and 5T secretary VK Pandian visited Nippon Steel in Tokyo. Apart from this, in the ‘2022 Make in Odisha Conclave’, an investment proposal of Rs 10.48 lakh crore was received. Out of the 466 approved industries, 90 have been grounded and the industries department has set a target of 40 percent of industries to be grounded within the next year.

Recently, the high-powered committee of the government has approved about Rs 85,000 crore worth of projects. Special emphasis is being given on setting up the green energy hydrogen ammonia project.
