Berhampur: The Ganjam district administration has decided to depute volunteers of the National Service Scheme (NSS) in polling booths to help the elderly, persons with disabilities and others during the Berhampur Municipal Corporation (BeMC) elections, scheduled to be held on March 24.
“We have already urged the district education officer (DEO) to depute some NSS volunteers to assist the elderly voters,” said V Keerthi Vassan, election officer-cum-sub-collector, Berhampur. Besides NSS volunteers, Asha and anganwadi workers will also assist pregnant women and the disabled on the poll day, sources said.
The district administration has also decided to deploy only women personnel in five polling centres in municipal corporation areas, three booths in municipality areas and one each in Notified Area Council (NO) areas. The district has 16 urban local bodies, including one municipal corporation in Berhampur, one municipality in Hinjili and 16 NACs. TNN
