No technical issue, batsmen have to adjust to the pace of the game

India captain Virat Kohli said that his batting unit has no technical snag in seaming or swinging position but asked them to adjust to the pace of the game to ensure that bowlers do not take shots. India’s batsmen could only manage 217 and 170 runs in tough batting conditions in the ICC World Test Championship final, which they lost to New Zealand by 8 wickets in Southampton.

Best Test team can’t be decided in one game, WTC final should be best of three: Virat Kohli

After this game, India have a five-Test series against England.

Two Away Wins, Unbeaten At Home: New Zealand’s Road To ICC World Test Championship Glory

“We definitely need to work on better plans to understand how runs are scored. We have to keep pace with the pace of the game and not let it go too far. Don’t think there’s a technical snag, it’s about being a little more adventurous. Unless there are complete clouds, we should be able to take the game forward and put the opposition under pressure,” Kohli said at the press conference.

“We are collectively trying to score runs on the board as a batting unit. There should be a mindset to score runs. You cannot allow the bowler to dictate terms, you are not even taking the game forward. If we keep 300 on the board in a row, it’s a different kind of game. Whenever we bat, we will try to execute that.”

Asked if India were planning to play warm-up matches against county teams ahead of the England Test, Kohli revealed that he was not given the option.

“It doesn’t depend on us. We wanted a first-class match but that was not given, I don’t know the reason. We have enough time for the first Test, we should be ready for it.”

Kohli also backed Rishabh Pant to play like him.

“Rishabh is definitely going to be an expressive player. He assesses situations very well. When things don’t go well, you can say it’s an error of judgment and that’s acceptable in the game. But we will continue to support him to play that way, find ways to score runs and put opponents under pressure. He can be a consistent match winner for India in future.”

Kohli said the Test team will continue to reevaluate and develop to stay on top.

“We will continue to reevaluate what needs to be done to improve our side,” he said. It is very important to develop with the game. When you’ve been at the top for a few years in a row, you don’t want to give up on your standards. We want to improve the areas that need to be improved. We’ll have those conversations in the near future, not that we’ll wait a year or so. The white ball team, the people are ready… the same thing has to be done for the Test team.”
