Punjab Chief Minister Charanjit Singh Channi on Friday said that no sacrilege took place in a gurdwara in Kapurthala and the FIR filed in the case would be amended.

Addressing the press, Charanjit Singh Channi said that the state police are investigating the incidents of violence at the Golden Temple and Kapurthala.

On December 19, a man was beaten to death in Nizampur village in Kapurthala after he allegedly tried to remove Nishan Sahib, a religious flag of the Sikhs, from atop a gurdwara.

Following the incident, the Kapurthala Police confirmed in a statement that no ‘sacrilege’ took place and the man who was beaten to death was trying to ‘steal’.

The incident took place in less than 24 hours after a man was beaten to death inside the Golden Temple in Amritsar after he allegedly tried to desecrate Guru Granth Sahib, the holy book of Sikhs.

Punjab Police probing links between two incidents

While the identities of Amritsar and Kapurthala victims have not been ascertained due to non-availability of documents, the Punjab Police is trying to investigate whether these accused were known to each other or part of a conspiracy. For this, the police are trying to scan their biometric prints to identify the accused.

In the Golden Temple ‘sacrilege’ bid case, police investigations revealed that the accused, who barged into the sanctum sanctorum, spent more than four hours inside the Golden Temple.
