A first-year M.Tech student at the National Institute of Technology Hamirpur has died under suspicious circumstances. The student had been found dead at the institute’s hostel. The incident occurred on the premises of NIT Hamirpur’s hostel number 211-M, as per reports. The student has been identified as 22-year-old Sujan Sharma, hailing from Bilaspur. The student’s family members were immediately notified of the situation and had arrived on the spot.

The student reportedly went to the annual “Hilfare” event at NIT Hamirpur on Friday, returned late that night, and then went to bed. However, when attempts were made to wake Sujan for breakfast the next morning, he did not respond, prompting police to be notified immediately. District police officers and the team from the health department rushed over to the campus to initiate an investigation. The deceased’s post-mortem examination will be performed at the Hamirpur Medical College.

In response to investigations regarding the incident, DSP Rohin Dogra and SP Dr. Aakriti Sharma of Hamirpur were also present at the scene. As part of the continuing police investigation, roommates who shared accommodation with the deceased student are currently being questioned. Additionally, there is considerable debate among the institute community about the probability that the terrible occurrence was linked to drug addiction.

Meanwhile, an electrical engineering fourth-year student at the Indian Institute of Technology (IIT) Kharagpur is said to have committed himself earlier this month. There has been an increase in student suicide cases over the previous several years, with IITs reporting the largest number of such occurrences over the past five years. IITs accounted for at least 39 out of a total of 98 suicide fatalities in India’s top higher education institutes between 2018 and 2023, according to statistics provided by the education ministry. Not only at IITs, but also at Kota, the nation’s coaching centre, where over 26 instances have been reported this year, there has been an upsurge in the number of student suicide cases.
