BIHARSHARIF : Sohsarai police station SHO Suresh Prasad was suspended on Sunday as one more person died on late Saturday night, taking the hooch toll in Nalanda to 11. The deceased was identified as Prahlad Mistry. Ten persons had died till Saturday afternoon allegedly after consuming poisonous liquor.
While nine of them belonged to Chhoti Pahadi under Sohsarai police station area, two were the residents of Parbhu Bigha under Manpur police station area. The condition of two others admitted to hospital on Saturday was stated to be critical while three more complained of blurred vision and restlessness. They were admitted to hospital on Sunday.
Police arrested five persons with country liquor, IMFL, liquor packaging material and equipment. Biharsharif SDPO Shibli Nomani said one Jitendra Kumar was arrested while raids were on nab his other five accomplices, who had supplied spurious liquor to the deceased.

Nalanda DM Shashank Shubhankar, who was accused by political leaders of trying to cover up the matter, admitted on Sunday that prima facie it appeared that all the 11 persons died after consuming poisonous liquor on Friday. He also said the claims of the kin of the deceased would be validated only after getting the postmortem reports.
The DM said 17 revenue officers have been asked to ascertain the nature of land being possessed by the kin of the deceased persons. He said action would be taken against them if they had encroached government land.
Nalanda SP Ashok Mishra said 184 litres of country liquor and 225 litres of IMFL were recovered. He said 34 persons were arrested in the district in the last 24 hours.
While meeting the relatives of the deceased at Chhoti Pahadi, Jan Adhikar Party (JAP) supremo Rajeev Ranjan alias Pappu Yadav alleged that the Nitish Kumar government has failed to properly implement prohibition law in the state. He alleged that liquor smuggling and illegal mining of sand were being carried out in nexus with the politicians, police and the criminals. He demanded action against senior officers for failing to prevent sale of spurious liquor and the deaths of poor persons mostly belonging to Dalit families. CPI(ML) MLA from Arwal, Mahanand Singh, demanded immediate removal of Nalanda DM and SP.
Leading a BJP delegation, senior party functionary Rajib Ranjan met the bereaved families and demanded thorough investigation, arrest of the culprits and suitable compensation to the kin of the deceased.
