Mutual cooperation can make a useful contribution to the post-Covid economic recovery globally, Prime Minister Narendra Modi said on Thursday while he was addressing the 14th BRICS Summit, being held in a virtual mode.

The BRICS member nations have a similar approach to the governance of the global economy, he stated.

During his opening remarks at the summit, hosted by China, PM Modi said, “There are multiple areas wherein, through cooperation between BRICS nations, the citizens have benefitted. By increasing connectivity between BRICS Youth Summits, BRICS Sports, civil society organizations & think-tanks, we’ve strengthened our people-to-people connect.”

It is a matter of happiness that membership of the New Development Bank (NDB) has increased, PM Modi said, adding that the cooperation among the member countries has benefitted their citizens.

“I am confident that our deliberations today will produce suggestions to further strengthen our ties,” he said.

He further noted that the member nations of the BRICS (Brazil, Russia, India, China and South Africa) grouping had managed to undertake structural changes over the last few years that increased the influence of the institution.

PM Modi also showed his gratitude towards the countries that participated in the celebrations of International Yoga Day on June 21.

The summit was also attended by Chinese President Xi Jinping, Russian President Vladimir Putin and the top leaders of Brazil and South Africa.
