MP Navneet Rana, Ravi Rana sent to judicial custody till May 6

A Mumbai court on Sunday sent MP Navneet Rana and her husband MLA Ravi Rana to judicial custody till May 6. The couple was arrested last evening for allegedly “creating enmity between different groups” over their threats to recite the Hanuman Chalisa outside Maharashtra Chief Minister Uddhav Thackeray’s home.

The arrest was made on the basis of an FIR filed by Shiv Sena workers under section 153A of the Indian Penal Code. Section 153 A is imposed against those found indulging in “wanton vilification or attacks upon the religion, race, place of birth, residence, language etc of any particular group or class or upon the founders and prophets of a religion.”

A counter FIR was also filed against the Shiv Sena workers for protesting outside the residence of the Ranas.
