Assam Chief Minister Himanta Biswa Sarma said on Thursday – the state government is planning to ban polygamy. A bill related to this will be introduced in the next assembly session.

Himanta Biswa Sarma said that we want to immediately ban polygamy in the state. Will present a bill to ban it in the assembly session to be held in September. If for some reason the bill cannot be brought in this session, it will be presented in the House in January. He said these things while talking to the media in Guwahati.

This statement of the CM of Assam has come at a time when the debate on Uniform Civil Code (UCC) is going on in the country. During this, he talked about supporting UCC as well.

Himanta Biswa Sarma said – Decision on UCC will be taken in Parliament
The CM said that the Law Commission has sought suggestions from the people for this, a decision will be taken to implement it in the Parliament. States will also contribute in this. If the UCC comes, we do not need to act, as the law banning polygamy will be merged with the UCC.

During this, the media questioned Sarma on the stand of Congress on UCC. In response, the Chief Minister of Assam said- Will any Congress leader give his daughter to a man who already has 2 wives? Congress is not understanding the plight of Muslim women, it is working only for Muslim men.

PM Modi said UCC at Motilal Nehru Stadium in Bhopal on June 27 – At present, the work of provocation is being done in the name of UCC. If there is one law for one member of the family in a house and another law for another member, then that house will not be able to run.

CM had decided to take action on child marriage
If the bill related to polygamy in Assam comes in the house, then it will be the second major step of the state government in matters related to marriages in a year. Earlier on January 23, 2023, the Assam government had decided to take action under the POCSO Act against men marrying girls below the age of 14 years.

Within a month of the CM’s decision, the Assam Police arrested more than 3000 people in the state. Most of these were husbands of minor brides and male members of their families.

When the protest against these arrests started, the CM even said – you have two options, either remove me from here or stop child marriage, there is no third option. Offenders will be arrested every six months.

Thoughts on bringing a new law on child marriage by 2026
CM Sarma had said in February 2023 that our stand is clear, child marriage should stop in Assam. We are discussing about bringing a new law against child marriage. By 2026, we are considering bringing new laws against child marriage, where the jail term will be increased from two years to 10 years.
