Recently, the Supreme Court gave a decision regarding sex workers. According to which ‘prostitution’ is not a legal offense. After this decision ‘prostitution’ also became like any other common profession. In its decision, the Supreme Court also said that ‘police should not harass sex workers unnecessarily’.

But long before this decision of the Supreme Court, the Bedia community has been considering prostitution as a normal profession. More or less all the women of this community are in the profession of prostitution. The men of the community do the work of bringing in the customers and negotiating with them.

‘I’m a wolf’

Sunita (name changed), living in Delhi’s red light area GB Road, was thrown into this profession in her childhood. When asked from where it started, she smiles and says – ‘I am the Bedia Hoon’.

Sunita also tells that not only she but the rest of the women in her house also do the same. His mother and sisters also work as sex workers in Madhya Pradesh. Sunita had no other option.

This is the history of Bedia community

Bedia community living in some villages of Madhya Pradesh has been considering prostitution as a means of earning for hundreds of years. It is said that this community used to dance and sing during the Mughal period. But later when the princely states ended, the community faced a livelihood crisis. In such a situation, the women of the community started doing prostitution.

According to the 2011 census, the population of this community is around 50 thousand. There are more than 60 Bedia villages in different districts of Madhya Pradesh, especially in Malwa region. Where the work of prostitution takes place. A local journalist from Morena, on the condition of anonymity, says that apart from these 60 villages, their network is spread all over the state including Bhopal. In recent times, girls from here have also started going to red light areas of Delhi and Banaras.

Shah Jahan had brought Agra

In Bedia legends it is believed that they are descendants of Beddi kings. It is believed that they originated from Gandharva, the artist of the gods. The famous folk dance ‘Rai’ also originated from the Bedia tribe. Many historians believe that during the construction of the Taj Mahal, the Mughal emperor Shah Jahan had settled the people of Bedia community around Agra. So that the artisans building the Taj Mahal can be entertained. But after the construction of the Taj Mahal, the employment of these poor people ended. So he turned to prostitution.

Girls of the Bedia community have now moved out of their villages and started doing prostitution in the red light areas of big cities like Delhi.

For whom coming to GB Road is an achievement

The entire social system of the Bedia community revolves around prostitution. That Bedia family is considered more prosperous, in which there are more girls. In such a situation, coming out of her village to the Red Light area of the capital Delhi is like an achievement. On which that girl and her family can be proud.

Other sex workers understand less

The other women working in GB Road consider the ‘Badiya girls’ as inferior to themselves. Describing Sunita, a sex worker who worked with her said, ‘This is what everyone does here’ and the pride was clearly visible on her face.

In this red light area of Delhi, there are many women who hide their identity and work as sex workers. After going to her village, she becomes a completely domestic woman. His family members or neighbors do not know anything about his work. But to say bad girls is different. They didn’t have any other option.
