The Municipal Corporation of Delhi (MCD) mayoral election will be held on April 26. AAP Aadmi Party leader Saurabh Bhardwaj told that Delhi Mayor Shelly Oberoi has fixed this date for the election.

The municipal elections in Delhi were held on 4 December and the results were declared on 7 December. Aam Aadmi Party won 134 out of 250 seats. Aam Aadmi Party (AAP) leader Shaili Oberoi was elected mayor on 22 February. He completed his 38-day term as mayor on 31 March. As per the rules, the election process has to be completed before April 30.

Saurabh said, I am hopeful that if the LG office follows all the rules, the elections will be held in a peaceful manner. Bhardwaj also attacked Delhi LG Vinay Kumar Saxena and said, it was very unfortunate that the LG nominated a presiding officer for the mayoral election who created hurdles in the election. He also tried to allow nominated members (aldermen) to vote against the constitution, for which he was reprimanded by the Supreme Court. The court said that this was wrong.

The party high command will decide on the mayor’s candidate.
Bhardwaj also suggested that the deputy mayor could be made the pro tem presiding officer, who could conduct the election of the mayor. He said, the matter related to the election of the members of the standing committee is pending in the court. I have no idea about the party’s candidate for the post of Mayor and the final decision on this will be taken by the party high command.

Shelly was mayor for 38 days
Shelly Oberoi, who won the Municipal Corporation of Delhi (MCD) elections by 34 votes, held the post of Mayor for only 38 days. Actually, according to section two (67) of the MCD, the year of the corporation starts from the first day of April, which will end on March 31 next year.

Delhi got a new mayor 80 days after the municipal elections. Shaili got 150 votes. He defeated BJP’s Rekha Gupta by 34 votes. Delhi has got a woman mayor after 10 years. Whereas, Aale Mohammad Iqbal of AAP was elected as the Deputy Mayor. He got 147 votes. He defeated Kamal Bagdi of BJP.

BJP’s Rajni Abbi was the last woman mayor in 2011. After this, in 2012, the Municipal Corporation of Delhi was divided into 3 parts in the Sheila Dixit government. In 2022, these parts were united again. After this it was the first election of MCD.

Shelly said after the victory – CM will work on Kejriwal’s 10 guarantees
After winning the mayoral election, Shelly said that we have to work together to fulfill the expectations of the people. For this, we will work on the 10 guarantees given by CM Kejriwal to the people. The inspection of the landfill site will be done within 3 months. On the other hand, after the victory of Shelly Oberoi, CM Arvind Kejriwal said that hooliganism was defeated, the people of Delhi won.

MCD election result came on December 8, BJP out after 15 years
The MCD elections in Delhi were held on 4 December, while their results came on 8 December. BJP did not get majority in MCD after 15 years in elections. To become mayor in the 250-seat house, 138 votes were needed. 241 corporators, 10 MPs and 14 MLAs cast their votes in the mayoral election. 9 Congress councilors did not participate in the election.

AAP corporator clashed with police before voting
A ruckus-like situation was witnessed at the Civic Center before the voting began. AAP councilors also clashed with the police. AAP corporators were opposing the entry of BJP MLA Vijender Gupta in the house. In view of the apprehension of an uproar, adequate security arrangements were made in the House. SSB jawans were deployed in the House.

Elections could not be held 3 times before this
Before this, an attempt was made to hold mayoral elections thrice, but it could not happen due to the uproar by BJP and AAP members. The reason for the uproar was LG VK Saxena’s decision to allow 10 nominated MCD members to vote. AAP’s mayoral candidate Shaili Oberoi had reached the Supreme Court regarding this.

On February 17, the Supreme Court ruled in favor of AAP. Was asked to issue notice within 24 hours. After this Delhi’s CM Arvind Kejriwal proposed to the Lieutenant Governor to hold elections on February 22, which he accepted within 2 hours.

There were three attempts on January 6, January 24 and February 6 for the deputy mayor along with the mayor and the six members of the standing committee, but each time the proceedings were adjourned following uproar by the BJP and AAP.

AAP-BJP uproar in three meetings

  • January 6: Members of AAP and BJP clashed at MCD headquarters. Due to the uproar, the process of election of mayor, deputy mayor and members of the standing committee had to be postponed.
  • January 24: Due to the uproar on January 6, the police had to be deployed at the headquarters. However, after this the members of both the parties started ruckus. Because of this, the House had to be adjourned again.
  • February 6: The mayoral election was postponed for the third time. Members of BJP and AAP started a ruckus after the 10 nominated members were approved for the vote. After this the proceedings of the MCD House were adjourned. The matter reached the Supreme Court.

SC said- Nominated members do not have the right to vote
On February 17, a hearing was held in the Supreme Court on the issue of Delhi Mayor elections. The court directed to conduct these elections in the first meeting. For this, asked to issue notice within 24 hours. During the hearing, the court said that nominated members do not have the right to vote.

The Supreme Court said that the election of the deputy mayor can be held only after the election of the mayor. LG appoints BJP corporator Satya Sharma as pro tem speaker for mayoral election. Earlier, AAP had proposed the name of Mukesh Goyal. AAP objected to Satya’s name. After this, as soon as Protem Speaker Satya started administering oath to the nominated members of LG, AAP started protesting and shouting slogans.

The Aam Aadmi Party says that the nominated members are not sworn in first, but the BJP is changing the tradition. BJP MP Meenakshi Lekhi said that AAP leaders are not aware of the rules. That’s why they are creating ruckus. Why fear when they are in majority? You MPs do the same thing in the Rajya Sabha.

On the other hand, the Congress decided not to participate in the mayoral election. AAP MLA Atishi has accused the Congress of favoring the BJP after she decided not to contest the polls. 273 members will vote in the Mayor’s election. A figure of 133 is needed for a majority. AAP has 150 votes while BJP has 113 votes.
