Mason Greenwood looks set for a high-profile switch, leaving Manchester United this summer. The Premier League club has reportedly agreed on a permanent deal with Marseille. The French outfit has reached an agreement in principle with Greenwood, who spent the last season at Getafe on loan. According to a report by the Athletic, the footballer has already agreed on personal terms and the deal is worth £26.7 million comprising a fixed fee of £23.3 million and £3.4 million in add-ons. The contract also includes a large share of any future sale.

Mason Greenwood will now jet off to France to undergo medical at Marseille and only then, the transfer can be completed. It appears to be a viable deal for both the player and his current club. If the deal happens, Manchester United will shatter a record in terms of profit by player sales.

Since Greenwood is an academy graduate, the Red Devils are guaranteed to gain a profit of £23.3 million which is the highest for the club since the retirement of legendary manager Sir Alex Ferguson. The previous record was of Dean Henderson who secured a £20-million move to Premier League rivals Crystal Palace.

Mason Greenwood has gone through enough turbulence over the last two years. Manchester United suspected him in January 2022 when the youngster was arrested on charges of attempted rape and sexual assault. The case was later discontinued after the Crown Prosecution Service saw key witnesses withdraw their co-operation.

Despite the case being settled, Manchester United decided to keep Mason Greenwood away from the squad. The club confirmed last August that the English forward won’t be brought back to the first team.

Speaking about Greenwood’s future, United boss Erik Ten Hag said that the final decision would be taken by the club management. “I can’t say so much about it. But what I say is I shared my opinion about it so let’s see what’s going to happen and what the decision will be,” the Dutch manager said, as quoted by the Mirror.

Mason Greenwood made 36 appearances for Getafe last season and registered 10 goals. He has played 129 matches for Manchester United since 2019 and has struck 35 goals.
