29 June 2020, Ratanpur area of Kanpur. It was around 10 in the night. The song was playing loudly on the DJ, ‘Chhote chhote bhaiya ke bade bhaiya, aaj banenge kisi ke saiya’. Khushi Dubey was dancing in the red wedding dress. At this time Khushi was sixteen and a half years old. On the question of getting married at such a young age, Khushi’s sister says, “Our father’s name is Shyamlal. They do the work of writing and painting on vehicles. At that time his health started deteriorating. He was admitted to the hospital. It was found that there is a problem in his lungs and he will have to undergo an operation.

Khushi’s father had no confidence in his life now. There was no other source of earning in the house. He started worrying about happiness. So he decided that he would get Khushi married. They thought that if Khushi would get married to a good boy, her life would improve. So he started looking for a boy for happiness. Only then an acquaintance asked him to meet Vikas Dubey.

Khushi’s parents reached Bikru village with the hope of their daughter’s marriage. There he met Vikas and talked about getting his daughter married. Vikas assures Khushi’s father that he will get her married. A few days passed, Vikas Dubey called Khushi’s house that he wanted to get Khushi married to his nephew Amar Dubey. Amar and Khushi meet with the entire family and the marriage is fixed.

Khushi’s family wanted to wait for some time for this marriage, because they had to arrange money. But Vikas Dubey made pressure to get married as soon as possible. He told the family that he would bear the wedding expenses, they need not worry. After just 15 days, Khushi got married to Amar Dubey. After getting married, Khushi reached Bikaru at Amar’s house. Two days passed, everyone was happy in the house. All the post-marriage rituals were taking place. Relatives were happily coming to visit.

Second: 2 days after marriage, handcuffs were in place of bracelets.

2 July 2020. It was around 9 pm. The ritual of showing the face went on throughout the day. Khushi was very tired, so she went to her room to rest. His eyes were slightly open that some sounds came from outside. He felt that the wedding season is going on, so people must be bursting crackers. Khushi tells that I heard those voices for some time, after that I was tired and fell asleep.

In fact, at around 12:45 this night, a police team reached Bikru village in search of gangster Vikas Dubey. But Vikas and his henchmen were already ambushed there. JCB was installed to stop the police at home. As soon as the police reached, the miscreants who climbed on the roofs started firing at them. In no time, 8 policemen including CO Devendra Mishra were killed.

3 July 2020. This incident shook the whole country including Bikru village. The police had also come into action now. First of all, the police encountered Prem Kumar Pandey, who was involved in the Vikas incident, and then killed Atul Dubey. Encounter after encounter started from here. Soon after, the police also killed Khushi’s husband Amar Dubey in Hamirpur. Amar was a big part of this whole scandal along with his uncle Vikas Dubey. After this, the police also killed Vikas Dubey in the encounter.

Encounters were happening continuously on one side. On the other hand, on July 4, 2020, the police reached Khushi Dubey’s house. Told him that he would have to come to the police station for some enquiry. The police took Khushi to the police station. Khushi says, “This interrogation with me went on for 4 whole days. I still shudder remembering what I have gone through in these 4 days. During this my health had also deteriorated. I started vomiting blood, my nose also started bleeding.

The police happily said that tell what you know, after that we ourselves will drop you home. But on July 8, 2020, instead of leaving Khushi home, the police sent her to jail. The police alleged that when Amar Dubey was firing at the policemen, Khushi was handing them cartridges. Also inciting the gang to attack them. She is an important member of Vikas Dubey’s gang.

Third: Husband did the crime and I got the punishment; Mother-in-law gave courage in jail

Talking about being imprisoned, Khushi says, “When I reached the jail, I didn’t know for what crime I was locked up there. Missed mom a lot. I used to cry all day long. I used to have a lot of pain in my head and stomach, but there was no one there to give me medicine. For some days I sat like this in silence. After that I met Amar Dubey’s mother i.e. my mother-in-law.

Khushi says that just as I had no fault, my mother-in-law and father-in-law have also not done anything wrong. Mother-in-law was with me in jail. She would talk to me throughout the day, give me courage. He assured me that one day I would get out of here.

On one side my mother-in-law was with me and on the other side my parents were stumbling everywhere for bail. He approached the court for bail. Hearing took place on about 95 dates. Whenever I saw my parents and sister at the hearing, I could not speak anything. She just kept crying hugging him.

After every date I started losing courage but still there was a hope in my mind that if I am not wrong then justice will definitely be done to me. Finally, after 30 months, the court granted me bail. But my fight is not over yet. I have to be acquitted now.

I will become a lawyer so that I can get justice for innocent people like me.
When asked what to do next in her life and whether to go back to her in-laws house or not, Khushi says, “I know my in-laws didn’t do anything because they were at home with me that day. That’s why I want them to get bail as soon as possible. But now I never want to go back to that house.

She further says that now I want to study by staying with my parents. Before all this, I loved biology and wanted to become a doctor, but now I want to become a lawyer. Found many people in jail who, like me, are serving a sentence for a crime committed by someone else. By becoming a lawyer, I want to provide justice to such people.

Looking at the CCTV outside the house, it seems that I am still imprisoned
When Khushi reached home after being released, CCTV cameras were installed around her house the same night. On this she says that when I have not committed any crime then I do not know why I am being monitored. Seeing the cameras near my house, it seems as if I am still imprisoned somewhere.
