MANGALURU: The Mangaluru South police on Wednesday arrested six fishermen from Andhra Pradesh for allegedly hanging a fisherman upside-down from a hook of a pulley and thrashing him.
The brutal assault on Vaila Sheenu, 32, of Prakasam district was carried out aboard a fishing vessel at the Old Port (Dakke) after they suspected him of stealing two mobile phones.
The arrested are Kondur Polaiah, 23, Avul Raj Kumar, 26, Karapingara Ravi, 27, Pralayakaveri Govindaiah, 47 (all from Nellore district) and Katingari Manohar, 21, Votu Kori Jalaiah, 30 (all from Prakasam district).
City police commissioner N Shashi Kumar said Sheenu was to join the accused on a fishing trip on the vessel John Shailesh-2 on December 16. The previous night the men met over dinner. The next morning, on realising that two mobile phones were missing, they suspected Sheenu of stealing them.
