Manchester Test: Jonny Bairstow and Zak Crawley stitched an unbeaten 62-run stand to steady England after 13 wickets fell on Day 1 of the 2nd Test. South Africa were bowled out for 151 inside 2 sessions.

England marched to a comfortable position after the opening day of the 2nd Test in Manchester against South Africa as Jonny Bairstow steadied their innings with an unbeaten 38. As many as 13 wickets fell on Thursday, August 25 as England took the first step towards fighting back in the series, bowling South Africa out for 151.

Kagiso Rabada was the top-scorer for South Africa with 36 as England pacers ran through the visitors’ batting line-up after Dean Elgar won the toss and opted to bat. James Anderson, who became the first man to complete 100 Tests at home, and Stuart Broad picked up 3 wickets each as South Africa struggled to deal with the improved intensity of the English attack.

Broad got the crucial wickets of Elgar and Keegan Petersen while captain Ben Stokes brought himself into the attack before Lunch to get the big wickets of Aiden Markram and Rassie van der Dussen as South Africa lost 5 wickets in the first session.

Ollie Robinson, who replaced Matty Poitts in the 2nd Test, picked up the wicket of Anrich Nortje, snapping a 35-run stand between him and Kagiso Rabada.

BAIRSTOW STEADIES ENGLAND

Jonny Bairstow led England to within 40 runs of South Africa’s first-innings total. England were 111 for three at the close of play with Bairstow on 38 not out and opener Zak Crawley playing a crucial supporting role on 17 from 77 balls.

The fourth-wicket partnership of 68 put England in a promising position after they had struggled early on, reeling at 43-3 after Joe Root was dismissed for nine.

For South Africa, Rabada, Nortje and Lungi Ngidi picked up a wicket each.

South Africa are leading the 3-match series 1-0 after hammering England at Lord’s by an innings and 12 runs.
