All the 6 convicts in the Rajiv Gandhi assassination case were released on Friday. Earlier, the Supreme Court had ordered the release of all the convicts, including Nalini and RP Ravichandran. On May 18, the Supreme Court had ordered the release of Perarivalan, convicted in the same case. The rest of the convicts had also demanded release from the court citing the same order.

Now Nalini Sriharan has said that it is not acceptable to add names in the assassination of Rajiv Gandhi, I do not know who killed him, but this charge should be dropped from me.

Nalini said – Some people are opposing our release. We are Congressmen. When Indira Gandhi and Rajiv Gandhi were assassinated, our family was sad, no one even had food. I cannot accept that my name was mentioned in the assassination of Rajiv Gandhi. I should be free from this charge. We do not know who killed him.

Appeal to release Sri Lankan citizens from Trichy camp
Murugan’s wife Nalini and Jayakumar’s wife Shanti had reached Trichy camp to meet him, where Nalini said that I appeal to the state and central governments to release 4 Sri Lankan citizens lodged in Trichy Special Camp, including my husband. Despite being released from jail, this camp is like going to jail again.

Significantly, after their release from jail, Santhan, Murugan, Robert Payas and Jayakumar have been kept in a special camp for foreigners in Trichy.

Nalini also said that she and her husband Murugan want to move to London and live with their daughter for the rest of their lives. He is separated from his daughter for almost 16 years. Nalini said that when she met Santhan, he told that he was going to Sri Lanka. While both Jayakumar and Robert Payas are yet to take any decision regarding their future.

Rajiv had sent peacekeeping forces to Sri Lanka during his tenure, due to which the Tamil rebel organization LTTE (Liberation Tigers of Tamil Eelam) was angry with him. On 21 May 1991, when Rajiv Gandhi went to Sriperumbudur near Chennai to campaign for the Lok Sabha elections, the LTTE carried out a suicide attack on Rajiv.

LTTE’s female terrorist Dhanu (Tenmoji Rajaratnam) detonated explosives tied around the waist. Due to which 16 people including Rajiv and Dhanu died on the spot, while 45 people were seriously injured.
