Voting is underway in Varanasi, from where Prime Minister Narendra Modi is seeking a third consecutive term

As polling began in 57 seats across 8 states and UTs for the seventh and last phase of the Lok Sabha elections on Saturday, Prime Minister Narendra Modi urged the voters to turn up in large numbers and cast their votes to make democracy more vibrant.

“Voting is going to take place today in the last phase of the Lok Sabha elections. I request all the voters of this phase to participate enthusiastically in this great festival of democracy. I am confident that our youth and women voters will come forward in record numbers to cast their votes. Let us together make our democracy more vibrant,” the Prime Minister, who is fray from Varanasi, posted on social platform X.

Voting is underway in Varanasi, from where Prime Minister Narendra Modi is seeking a third consecutive term.

In Varanasi, those contesting against Modi are Ajay Rai (Congress), Ather Jamal Lari (BSP), Kolisetty Shiva Kumar (Yuga Thulasi Party), Gagan Prakash Yadav, (Apna Dal, Kameravadi), and independents Dinesh Kumar Yadav and Sanjay Kumar Tiwari.

Other prominent candidates among the total 904 contestants in fray are Union minister Anurag Thakur, Mamata Banerjee’s nephew Abhishek Banerjee, Lalu Prasad’s daughter Misa Bharti and actor Kangana Ranaut.

Saturday’s voting is marking the end of the marathon polling process that began on April 19 and has already covered 486 Lok Sabha seats in 28 states and Union territories. Counting of votes will be taken up on June 4.

Polling is taking place in all 13 seats of Punjab and four of Himachal Pradesh, 13 constituencies in Uttar Pradesh, nine in West Bengal, eight in Bihar, six in Odisha and three seats in Jharkhand besides Chandigarh. Polling for the remaining 42 assembly constituencies of Odisha and by-polls to six assembly seats in Himachal Pradesh is also taking place simultaneously.
